May 2025 Featured Artist - Barbara Stroer

I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and was educated at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I received a BFA in studio art and a MA in communication. I began my art career as a ceramic sculptor, moved on to graphic design, and finally to teaching art in both elementary and high school. I have lived and taught in Alabama, California, Illinois, and Florida. After more than twenty years of teaching, I am currently happily retired and producing art here in Sun City.

We are so fortunate here to be surrounded by the abundant subject matter of the marshes and oceans within a few moment’s drive. Nature is a huge influence, and the natural organic shapes of animals and plants find their way into my work. Coming from a watercolor background, I am fascinated with the fluid qualities of water. The accidental moving and flowing of the paint make up a large part of my work, either as backgrounds for my sea life and nature paintings, or as stand alone abstract work.

I have previously displayed my paintings in P.A.S.T.A. Gallery in St. Augustine, Florida, and in Atlantic Beach Arts Market in Atlantic Beach, Florida. I have lived in Bluffton for almost three years and am still settling in to my retired lifestyle. Currently I display work at Soba in Bluffton, at the Hilton Head Art League, and of course in Sun City.
