October 2023 Featured Artist - Helen Hodge

My name is Helen Hodge and I’ve been a resident of Riverbend since 2021. I am blessed to have a wonderful husband, 4 incredible children and their families with 9 loving grandchildren. I grew up on the water so love going to the beach, especially Hunting Island, and kayaking with my husband on the marsh. Watercolor is my favorite medium. I was first introduced to it in college by my Chinese professor, Mun Quan. He walked us through the process of using the wet technique on the paper, applying paint in unique ways, and adding the final finishing touches. We always ended up with decent paintings! I use that style today to capture nature’s best in my coastal paintings. I love capturing the imagination and harnessing the power of nature to influence emotion. There is great pleasure in working with watercolor, adapting, and going with the flow, instead of having a predetermined outcome. It has a life of its own, and once applied cannot be undone. I love the illusion of light and depth that this medium allows and strive to have my paintings reflect that.
