Important Information and Upcoming Classes

Class Guidelines for

Students and Teachers

                                                 

1.  Members are encouraged to NOT come to the studio if they are feeling unwell.
                                                                     

2.  Members are welcome to bring their own cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer. Some supplies will also be provided. Studio users are encouraged to clean the space they will use when they arrive at the studio, ​and​ before they leave.
                                                                     

3.  When in the studio, one person may sit at each table, positioned in the center. Doing this will maintain the recommended 6 feet social distancing. The teacher will remain in the front at the teacher’s station.
                                                                     

4.  Studio users are requested to wear masks while in the studio. Please remember, according to the CDC, masks are intended to keep people safe from the person who is wearing it, and a mask is not a substitute for social distancing. Any visitor coming into the studio is requested to wear a mask. Masks will not be provided. 

Until Spring 2021, all classes will be paid by signing up in the Art Studio Classes Notebook.  You may only pay by CAM number.

 

In the Spring, you will be able to sign up and pay for the classes on this website.

CURRENT CLASSES

PAINTING PET PORTRAITS WITH PASTEL PENCILS

Description of Class:  

Learn to use this very forgiving fun medium to paint a portrait of your favorite pet.  In this class, a portrait view of a short-haired Jack Russell that is easy enough for even a student just starting with pastel pencils to achieve a likeable result will be demonstrated.  You will learn how to layer colors to achieve a realistic looking dog.  The method shown can be used to paint a portrait of your own pet.

Objectives:  

Mary’s philosophy is that the artist should paint subjects that inspire and have a personal connection. The student is encouraged to bring items or photos to work from, but a different optional subject will be provided for each class when requested. The course will include various watercolor techniques and principles of design, as well as drawing, composition, and the role of color and values.  Mary will teach via discussion, and demonstration, with personal attention and examples.

Recommended for complete novices or those wishing to refresh their knowledge of watercolor!

Instructor will be providing professional grade paints and brushes if you don’t have your own. Bring your own if you have any watercolor supplies

 

All the basics will be covered in the 9 hours of instruction! Instructor will be providing all sketches that we will be painting-you’ll not need to do any drawing!

 

Topics covered: paper, palettes, paint, practicing brush strokes, basic washes, how to achieve various textures, use of color wheel, mixing colors, and how to use masking fluid.

 

Please be prepared the first day to purchase a sheet of paper from the room for $7.50 if you don’t have any paper-it will be cut down & used all 3 classes.

Exciting interpretation of crashing waves, rocks, and seashore.  A sketch will be given if you choose to use it but bringing your own reference picture or sketch is encouraged.

SUPPLIES:  Your usual watercolor supplies will do, but you may need masking fluid and phMartin's bleed-proof white and an old toothbrush (the firmer the better).  If you don't have bleed-proof white, white gouache will do.

FROM PICTURE TO CANVAS:

Exploring ways to enlarge a picture

and “translate” it onto paper or canvas.

 

JANUARY 11, 2021

LIMIT:  Minimum 4; Maximum 8 students

SIGN UP BY:   January 6th

SUPPLIES:  Bring 9x12 or 11x14 paper or pad, a No. 2 pencil, ruler, eraser, and picture you would like to enlarge.

OBJECTIVES:  To explore ways to enlarge and draw a picture onto a larger paper or canvas using a light box, the enlarger, transfer paper, a grid, large shape sketch, and a pentograph drawing tool. I will provide 14X17 mix media paper for a “final project” and have extra supplies available to use.

OBJECTIVES:  To practice basic acrylic painting techniques.  To explore basic color mixing, light and shadow in painting.  To paint a simple acrylic low country marsh scene.

OBJECTIVES:  This class is a beginner's oil class with the goal to learn basic oil painting techniques.  Students will practice skills and complete a simple, modern landscape scene.
